Mitch Evans wins Berlin ePrix Race 2 from Rowland and Wehrlein

Mitch Evans won Sunday’s Berlin ePrix race 2 from Oliver Rowland and Pascal Wehrlein to shake up the championship standings.

Saturday’s winner. Nico Müller, finished in 13th position at the challenging Berlin Tempelhof circuit as race tactics again proved critical.

“We took a punt with the tyres in qualifying using a new set but being patient in the race,” commented Evans after the race.

“Full credit to the team for getting me through that one but yes, I wasn’t expecting that waking up today.

“It’s a combination of a lot of things obviously in the car you have to read the race well and get a feel for it but I have a great team behind me.

“It’s not all down to one person, it’s a collective effort and I think we’ve seen over the years with GEN3 whether it’s me or other drivers, driving for Jaguar, we’re always at the front at these types of races.

“It was a team effort today.”

Pole sitter Pascal Wehrlein led Taylor Barnard into Turn 1 from Nick Cassidy and a fast-starting Jean-Eric Vergne. Felipe Drugovich, Eriksson and Nyck De Vries in close attendance.

With the field bunching up, De Vries was an early casualty making contact with Buemi and Edoardo Mortara as Buemi rocketed up to second from 14th on the grid.

It was an astonishing start from the former Swiss champion.

But as is the norm in Formula E Racing, the positions shuffled radically over the opening laps.

With the majority of the field again leaving it late to employ the two Attack Modes for an extra 350kW of power split over 8 minutes, it was Evans who held the advantage with a lap remaining.

When the dust settled, it was the master tacticians of team Jaguar Racing who judged it the best, allied in no small part to the excellence of Evans behind the wheel of the car.

It all means that after two rounds of racing in the German Capital, Wehrlein leads the championship standings by just three points from Evans with Mortara five points further back.

Racing resumes around the iconic Monaco circuit on 16-17 May.
