History made as Nick Cassidy wins Mexico ePrix for Citroën

Nick Cassidy made electric racing history for the new Citroën Racing Formula E team by winning the Mexico ePrix from Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara and defending champion Oliver Rowland.

It was another fabulous display of driving from the New Zealander, who picked his moment to pounce to perfection.

Starting down in P13, Cassidy sliced his way through the field before utilising an eight-minute Attack Mode to take the lead before holding off Mortara’s late charge.

“This is unbelievable! In front of all these amazing fans, this atmosphere is second to none in Formula E, so to get a win here with Citroën, what a dream start we’ve had,” said Cassidy afterwards.“I’m just so happy for my team and thanks to them for believing in me, for bringing me to be part of this project. I think there are some really cool times ahead – what a moment.

“I didn’t think until the last lap that we were okay. I was happy with the P4 today, starting P13, my radio was very much like ‘let’s secure a good result’ but my engineer has always been making the right calls.

“This one is very much for him as it is for me and the whole team. It’s the team, the car, the package and the strategy that enabled us to win that race – you can’t win this race with a bad car.”

Victory for Cassidy means he now leads the championship with 40 points from Jake Dennis and Rowland with Citroën Racing also taking charge of the Teams’ Championship with a four-point lead over Andretti.

Racing next resumes around the streets of Miami on January 31.

“I’m really excited to be racing at the Miami International Autodrome, it’s always something special heading to a new venue for the first time,” added Cassidy.

“We’ve had a strong start to the season, especially with the win in Mexico City, and the momentum within the Citroën Racing team is really encouraging.”
