Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Sergio Perez will partner Max Verstappen at the team on an initial one-year contract for the 2021 Formula One season, with Alex Albon dropping to test driver.
The Mexican has been rewarded for another very strong season with the BWT Racing Point team, partnered by Acronis, whilst Albon has failed to live up to expectations with Verstappen again responsible for his team finishing second in the constructors’ standings.
“I am incredibly grateful to Red Bull for giving me the opportunity to race for Red Bull Racing in 2021,” commented Perez on his new team’s press release. “The chance to race for a championship contending team is something I have been hoping for since I joined Formula One and it will be a proud moment to step onto the grid in Red Bull colours alongside Max.”
Perez enjoyed a fine second half of the season, culminating in a memorable victory at the Sakhir Grand Prix that means he finished an impressive fourth in the drivers’ standings. A consistent performer since 2011, it was too much for Red Bull Racing to ignore.
“You can be sure that I will give next season my full focus,” added Perez. “The Team has the same winning mentality as me and I know I am here to perform and help the Team fight for another title.”
For the likeable Albon, it’s certainly not the end of the road, as he will continue to be an important part of the Red Bull Racing programme going forwards.
“Having taken our time to evaluate all the relevant data and performances we have decided that Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021,” commented team principal Christian Horner.
“Alex is a valued member of the Team and we thought long and hard about this decision. Having taken our time to evaluate all the relevant data and performances we have decided that Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021 and look forward to welcoming him to Red Bull Racing.
“Alex remains an important part of our Team as Test and Reserve Driver with a key focus on 2022 development and we would like to thank him for his hard work and contribution.”
