City Tour

Please join us for this excursion to discover the lively medieval town of Schaffhausen and to be amazed to see one of the most spectacular natural sights of Switzerland.

14:00-17:00 – Friday, 11 January 2019

We will get the first overview of Schaffhausen from the Munot, a fortification atop a vine-covered hill. Aside from the impressive view, this 15^th century fortress boasts several old canons. A paved path will lead us to the medieval Old Town: baroque architecture, oriel windows, unique hand-painted facades and small squares with ornamental fountains. We will admire the most distinctive house:  the 15^th century Haus zum Ritter decorated in scenes from ancient mythology and Roman history, and then discover the reformed Munster dominating the center of Schaffhausen and several buildings of the former Benedictine monastery of All Saints, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture.

A short ride along the Rhine River and through the picturesque neighbor city of Neuhausen will bring us to the majestic Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe, stretching 137 meters across the river and cascading from heights of up to 23 meters. The water flow is around 600 m3 per second in summer and 250 m3 in winter. We will leave the bus near Laufen Castle, a Swiss national heritage site. Glass elevator will get us down to the river level, where the crashing water leaps, boils and sprays the viewing platform. We can also cross the bridge to the north side and contemplate the falls from a distance.
