Elliott declared winner at Pocono Raceway after top two disqualified

Chase Elliott maintained his advantage at the top of the NASCAR Cup standings after his remarkable consistent form rewarded him with third place at Pocono Raceway, later upgraded to first after top-two finishers Ross Chastain and Joe Gibbs failed post-race inspection.

Coming off the back of victory in Atlanta and second at New Hampshire, Elliott surged to the front of the field after capitalizing on several late-race restarts and his upgraded result means that he extends his points lead to 105 markers over Ross Chastain with only five races left in the regular season.

“There were some issues discovered that affected aero in the vehicles. The part was the front fascia. There really was no reason why there was material somewhere where it shouldn’t have been,” Cup Series managing director Brad Moran is quoted on Motorsport.com.

“They have the opportunity to appeal it and it will be all sorted out next week. I can’t get into details on what the issues were but both vehicles had the same issue and unfortunately they were not acceptable to pass inspection.”

Making it an even better day for the Hendrick Motorsports team, partnered by Acronis, defending champion Kyle Larson piloted his Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 home in the fifth position.

Elliott’s latest triumph is yet another one for the record books for this remarkable team, it being Hendrick Motorsports’ 19th victory at Pocono – the most by any one team at the 2.5-mile venue.

Next up for Hendrick Motorsports is the mighty Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, where the team will strive for further success on July 31.
