Bowman pipped to flag in COTA thriller, Elliott fourth

The Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Cup team, partnered by Acronis, kept up it’s amazing run of results as Alex Bowman was pipped to the flag by debut winner Ross Chastain in an absolute classic at Circuit of the Americas.

In a frantic finish to the race, Bowman, Chastain and A.J. Allmendinger were all in with a shout of victory. But coming into the final turn, Chastain nudged Allmendinger, who also sent Bowman off course and allowing Chastain a thrilling win.

“We had a really fast Ally Camaro,” said Bowman after his second top-two effort in six events this season. “I’ve been trying to do a better job as a race car driver at these road courses, and I felt like from where we started the weekend, I accomplished that. I’m so proud of (crew chief) Greg (Ives) and all the guys.”

The result means that Bowman moves up to fourth in NASCAR Cup Series points standings but teammate Chase Elliott’s fourth place finish at COTA means that he extends his lead in the Cup Series standings to 13 points over Ryan Blaney.

Next on the NASCAR schedule is the first of series of short track races over three weekends, starting with Sunday’s 400-lapper at Richmond Raceway.
