Motorsport TechnologyJosef Newgarden continued his love affair with the World Wide Technology Raceway, winning the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 from Marcus Ericsson and Christian Rasmussen.
Victory for Newgarden was his sixth in 11 starts at the 1.25-mile oval and his 15th on oval tracks of his total of 34 career wins.
“Great job to the group,” Newgarden is quoted on the official IndyCar website. “Just a methodical night.
“We had a good car to start. It wasn’t perfect, but it really came to us just when we needed it. It was a track position day.”
The win was far from straightforward, Newgarden having to make several overtakes after starting from eighth on the grid.
And after taking the lead from Rasmussen late in a race that saw a record 268 passes for position, he was able to hold Ericsson at bay to the flag.

“You’ve got to give a lot of credit to Marcus,” added Newgarden. “I thought he was incredibly strong.
“I don’t really think there was much between us, so it was a matter of who was going to get position on each other, and that was going to seal the deal. He drove a great race.”
For Ericsson, second position means a welcome return to the podium as he chases that elusive first victory since March 2023 at St. Petersburg.
“I’m very proud of our performance, but at the same time it’s tough to lead that many laps,” said Ericsson.
“I thought we had it at some points, but Josef is the best in the business on these short ovals.”

After the latest results, it means that Alex Palou still holds a commanding 49 point lead over Kyle Kirkwood in the overall standings with David Malukas in third ahead of Lundgaard, Pato O’Ward and latest winner Newgarden.
The NTT IndyCar Series resumes with the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America on Sunday, June 21 at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
