Alex Palou celebrated victory in the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix a day after he saw his beloved Spain win the Soccer World Cup in New York.
Palou was pictured in the pit lane on Saturday cheering on Spain and took it as inspiration to edge home Nashville winner Josef Newgarden and David Malukas.

“That’s a pretty cool weekend for Spain,” Palou is quoted on IndyCar.com.
“It’s impressive what they did yesterday in the World Cup, and I’m happy to top it off today on Monday. My first-ever win on Monday – I’ve never raced on a Monday. So, pretty cool.”
Victory for Palou marked his fifth victory of the season and a 24th IndyCar career victory.
It also ensures that he takes a comfortable 83-point lead over David Malukas in the series standings with only six races remaining.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Palou, who started from fourth on the grid. He had to grind it out under severe pressure in the closing stages.
Unhappy with the handling of his car, he pitted twice on laps 123 and 185 for crucial adjustments to keep his rivals at bay.

“Julian (Robertson, engineer) and everybody on the 10 and CGR prepared a really, really good car for today.
“The beginning of the race we were not that comfortable in traffic, but the last two stints I was just super comfortable.
“It was a close battle there with Newgarden. It just seemed like he had so much speed there, and I was flat-out for the last 30, 35 laps. Just awesome to win here.”
