A race to remember – George Russell revels in special Singapore win

For George Russell, the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix could very well represent a pivotal moment in his career.

It seems absolutely ludicrous to say it, but at the time of writing, the five times Formula One winner and former F2 champion still has no contract penned in for 2026.

With Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff having put his faith in the Englishman to replace Valtteri Bottas as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate in 2022, he has barely put a foot wrong. Indeed, he outqualified the seven-time world champion a whopping 19-5 in 2024 and has finished ahead of Hamilton in the points in two of the last three seasons.

Will this latest result sway the head of team boss Wolff? Russell certainly hopes so.

“I’m really pleased with our victory this evening,” Russell is quoted on the official Mercedes AMG F1 website. “This track has not always been my best friend over the years, maybe from my own doing. We didn’t start the weekend in the best way either but come Q3 yesterday I felt really good in the car and that carried on into today. It was such a long race, so I was very glad to see the chequered flag, but we ultimately had it all under control.

“The goal for us is to finish second in the Constructor’s Championship this year. This result helps us in that quest, but we still have six races to go. We will need to be at our best if we are to achieve that but hopefully we can carry this form into the double header of Austin and Mexico City. Congratulations to McLaren on their Constructor’s title and to Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains too.”

It was certainly a drive that impressed team boss Toto. Only time will tell if it rewards Russell with a new contract. But the omens are certainly good.

“That was an amazing drive from George this evening. He controlled the race from lights out to the chequered flag to take a brilliant win. The pace he and the car had was surprising but strong and that was the winning formula today.

“It was also great to have PETRONAS represent our team on the podium with Tengku Muhammad Taufik receiving the trophy. They are a brilliant title partner, and it is sweet to win at what is the closest race on the calendar to Malaysia.”

SINGAPORE GP TECH TALK WITH CRAIG SCARBOROUGH

The Singapore GP offers one of the biggest tests for the drivers on the calendar for a variety of reasons. Because the race takes place at night, the drivers effectively have to adapt quickly back to European time and adjust their body clocks accordingly from the flight over from Baku.

That’s not all the drivers have to cope with. The extreme humidity and soaring cockpit temperatures mean the drivers have to take on plenty of fluid to compensate for the up to 3kg of body weight they can lose in the race.
