McLaren F1 celebrates first back-to-back title since Senna in 1991

The record books will say that the winner of the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix was George Russell of the Mercedes AMG F1 Team.

That indeed is very significant for a now 5x Formula One race victor. Also significant was the fact that the Famous McLaren F1 team took its tenth constructors’ crown courtesy of Lando Norris’ and Oscar Piastri’s third and fourth place finishes respectively.

It all means that McLaren now overtake WilliamsF1 for second place in the all-time list, who boast nine with Mercedes on eight. Ferrari still remains supreme with 15.

It’s certainly a fact not lost on team boss Andrea Stella, who has been instrumental in returning the team to where it belongs amongst the F1 elite.

“For the second year in a row, McLaren are the Constructors’ Champions, an incredible feeling to end a very competitive weekend in Singapore!” Stella is quoted on the official McLaren F1 website. “Last year, it went all the way to the final lap of the final race, so to be able to secure the title with six races to go in the 2025 season is an unbelievable effort from the entire team.

“Our race pace was strong today against our closest competitors, although it was hard to take advantage in the dirty air. Both Lando and Oscar demonstrated their exceptional talent to secure an important result for the team, as we’ve seen on many occasions this season.

“Thank you to everyone in the team, both trackside and in Woking, for their incredible effort. We can all be very proud of this achievement, the first back-to-back Constructors’ Championship for McLaren since 1991. Thank you to our PU supplier HPP, our valuable technical and commercial partners and of course, our loyal papaya fans.

“It’s great that our teamwork is rewarded like this, but we must enjoy the moment this evening and then turn our attention to preparing for a competitive challenge in the final six races of the season.”

And that’s only the first part of what is almost certain to be a constructor and driver double, also the first since the Senna 1991 era. It’s destined to be either Piastri or Norris, unless a certain man called Max Verstappen can put a spanner in the works.

“I am very proud of this team,” added champion in waiting Piastri. “We’ve won back-to-back Constructors’ Championships, something we are all so proud of. It’s been a really good season so far, and to win it this early in the year is a great achievement.

“A massive congrats to the whole team, and thank you for all of the hard work. It was a trickier race on my side, but it’s something we’ll review as a team. Now, we’ll rest and reset before we head to the US.”

The sad thing? We have two weeks to wait until battle resumes in earnest at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

SINGAPORE GP TECH TALK WITH CRAIG SCARBOROUGH

The Singapore GP offers one of the biggest tests for the drivers on the calendar for a variety of reasons. Because the race takes place at night, the drivers effectively have to adapt quickly back to European time and adjust their body clocks accordingly from the flight over from Baku.

That’s not all the drivers have to cope with. The extreme humidity and soaring cockpit temperatures mean the drivers have to take on plenty of fluid to compensate for the up to 3kg of body weight they can lose in the race.
