Gold Coast Glory for Mostert after Bathurst disappointment

Chaz Mostert made amends for his Bathurst disappointment to bounce back with a dominant victory in the Gold Coast 500 for Walkinshaw Andretti United.

It was teammate Ryan Wood who secured his second ever pole position in the shootout, with Mostert slotting in P4 for the 250km race.

But after maintaining the lead from his front placed grid slot, a fuel leak meant he had to soon return to the garage for repairs, effectively putting him out of contention for the race victory.

“I’m pretty gutted, we put ourselves in the best possible today starting off the front row, the crew did a great job getting the car back out on track to salvage some points,” commented Wood on the official Walkinshaw Andretti website. “Pretty cool to get my second ever pole position today, the car has been hooked up all weekend.

“We have another shot at it tomorrow, we will definitely be going for the race win, we know we have the car pace to do it.”

It was now down to Mostert to set about the leaders, and, following a safety car period that led to a free pit stop, he hunted down Broc Feeney and made the move stick to take the lead.

The work was far from done, Mostert rejoining effectively in P4 behind new leader David Reynolds. Undeterred, Chaz dialled in fast lap after fast lap to catch and pass the leader on the inside with 12 laps of the race remaining.

And that’s where he remained for his second victory of the season and importantly a spot in the semi-finals at Sandown.

“Feels so good to get a win on home turn and book a ticket through to the semi-finals at Sandown!” added Mostert. “So proud of the guys and girls in the Walkinshaw Andretti United team, they built an impressive supersoft car, I gave the tyres a workout, but the car was on fire!

“I’m so happy for myself but I’m gutted for Ryan, we both had quick cars. We will do whatever we need to tomorrow to make sure he makes it to Sandown.”
