Larson takes third win of season at Homestead as Elliott and Byron remain in title hunt

Kyle Larson bounced back in fine style from his altercation with Bubba Wallace in Las Vegas by claiming a superb third win of the season at Homestead-Miami, the Californian leading 199 of 267 laps of the circuit in beating Ross Chastain and A.J Allmendinger to the flag.

Although the defending champion is no longer in the hunt for ultimate NASCAR Cup glory, the victory was a sweet one indeed and means that he competes in the owner’s Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway in two weeks.

“Yeah, definitely the best run we’ve had all year long,” commented Larson on the official Hendrick Motorsports website. “We’ve been capable of it I feel like many weekends, we just haven’t quite put it all together.

“Cliff (Daniels, crew chief) gave a great speech this morning and got us all ready to go and focused, and I did my best to keep it out of the wall. I got in the wall a few times, but I could still make speed doing that.”

For the Hendrick Motorsports team, partnered by Acronis, the season is still very much alive with both Chase Elliott and William Byron in strong contention for the ultimate prize.

Byron, who boasts two victories this season and started from pole, brought home his No. 24 Liberty University Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in 12th position to gain 17 valuable stage points that puts him five markers above the playoff cutline.

Following hot on Byron’s heels, Elliott finished the race in the 14th position and heads into Martinsville Speedway next week with an 11-point advantage over the final transfer spot.

“We were playing defense all day, but we were doing a pretty good job of it and staying inside the top-five there, so that was great.” added Elliott. “But that’s what happens when you’re playing defense and you have something like that happen to you.. you just get stuck. The other guys that got buried; they drove right back to the front. That’s just the difference.”
