Brilliant Larson bags fifth win of the series in Hendrick 1-2

Kyle Larson continued his and Hendrick Racing’s incredible form of 2021 by winning his fifth race of the season at Watkins Glen, leading home teammate Chase Elliott for another 1-2.

Victory for Larson was his first at the famous raceway and the team’s ninth victory there and also meant that it’s the fourth time this year that the dominant duo of Larson and Elliott have finished first and second.

“Hats off to HendrickCars.com,” Larson is quoted on the official Hendrick Motorsports website. “Thanks for everything you guys do for me, everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, Rick Hendrick, Jeff Gordon, Cliff Daniels, this whole (No.) 5 bunch.

“Another amazing car. I could tell from about lap three after I stopped making a bunch of mistakes that we were going to have a car that could win today.”

Victory for Larson was far from straightforward, having to overtake Martin Truex Jr. for the lead with 25 laps remaining before fighting hard to keep a charging Elliott behind him.

“Super proud of our team,” added Elliot. “Been kind of an uphill battle all day, but everybody was just super prepared coming into the day, and our NAPA team just did a really good job of fighting it.”

William Byron made it an even better day for the organisation with his battling sixth place finish for his 15th top-10 of the season to maintain the pressure on Larson and Denny Hamlin in the drivers’ standings.
