Pedro Acosta nets overdue first MotoGP win from Martin and Bezzecchi in Austria

Pedro Acosta finally claimed a long overdue first victory in MotoGP, beating Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin to the chequered flag in the Austrian GP.

The wait for that first win spanned almost three years and many near misses that included a total of 15 podiums.

“Finally. I can just say thanks to KTM and to all the team. Also to Tektro guys, because they helped to repair my, my bike from the crash this morning and without them we couldn’t have two bikes ready for the race for this.”

For experts and fans alike, this victory in particular was a welcome one.

And the Spaniard did so in style, getting past future teammate Marc Marquez, Ai Ogura and Bezzecchi by the end of Lap 7.

It was a supreme sequence of overtaking and now race leader Martin was the only rider that lay between himself and victory.

And as soon as Lap 9 he was ahead, out breaking Martin on the run down into Turn 2.

It would be a lead he would not relinquish despite some late pressure from the lead Aprilia towards the finish, Martin just holding off Bezzecchi at the flag.

“Super happy about the race,” added Acosta. “Jorge was pushing a lot at the beginning, and I was starting a bit to catch him.

“But then I was just trying to learn from the mistake from the last day and trying to make the gap even bigger than what I needed, you know.

“At the end I was trying to maintain this and maintain the fuel, you know, because it was quite a tricky track for that. But anyway, quite happy when I did it.

“It’s more emotional to do it in KTM home and Red Bull house, you know, super happy for them, super happy for myself because we were struggling a lot.

“They were struggling a lot last year even to keep competing in the championship, you know, and finally how they build to go away from this bankruptcy and us recovering the potential of our bike was quite awesome.

“I just can’t say thanks enough like you say, a long way until here, but we will enjoy that for sure.”

Ai Ogura trailed in marginally behind Bezza for fourth whilst Marc Marquez’s fifth place finish means he surrenders his hard-fought title lead to Martin by just 12 points.

Next up on the MotoGP calendar is a trip to Japan from October 2-4 at the challenging Motegi Twin Ring circuit.
