Marco Bezzecchi and Aprilia win maiden Italian GPs with Jorge Martin second

Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin created history for Aprilia Racing in front of a jubilant home crowd, a 1-2 finish also meaning a first win on home soil for the Italian manufacturer.

Bezzecchi had started from pole position after shattering the Mugello lap record in qualifying but lost out to Martin into Turn 1.

The Italian championship leader regained the lead on lap 4, sweeping past his teammate and into a lead many expected him to extend and scamper off into the distance.

Three-time Italian GP victor Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia hadn’t read the script, however, and is a force to be reckoned with on his beloved Mugello.

It led to something of a battle royale between the Italian home favourites, and it wasn’t until ten laps remaining that Bez made the decisive race winning move.

With Bagnaia having fought so hard for the lead, his Ducati tyres were beginning to feel the pain, and he was duly reeled in by Martin, who took second place from him with a handful of laps remaining.

Pecco’s third place was now even in doubt, the brilliant Ai Ogura having carved his way through to be on his back wheel with a lap remaining.

Indeed, it looked as though Ogura may have done it when he briefly overtook into Turn 14. But he ran wide and allowed Pecco to dive inside and regain his podium to the flag.

Behind the top three finishers, Ogura held firm for fourth ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, Pedro Acosta and the impressive Marc Marquez.

The nine-time Moto GP champ had held fourth four long periods until his recently operated-on body began to tire.

It all means that the impressive Bezzecchi extends his championship advantage over teammate Martin to 17 points with Di Giannantonio a further 22 points behind him.
