Marc Marquez wins San Marino GP to draw level with Martin in title race

Marc Marquez continued his stunning comeback from injury to win the San Marino GP and draw level with Spanish compatriot Jorge Martin in a thrilling title race.

It hardly seemed possible only a handful of races ago, the seven-time world champion recovering from both a shoulder surgery at the end of 2025 and also missing two races with an ankle fracture suffered at Le Mans.

But anyone who knows this sport also knows that he’s a legend of the game and having been a full 102 points adrift just seven rounds ago, five wins have now highlighted him as the man to beat.

With long standing championship leader Marco Bezzecchi crashing out of the lead on Lap 1, Marquez led home his brother Alex and Pedro Acosta to make it an all-Spanish podium.

And with Fermin Aldeguer, Martin and Raul Fernandez following them to the flag, it was an unprecedented milestone in the sport’s history for Spain.

“There was no chance. Now we have a chance,” Marquez said after the race.

“But it’s true that was a super good weekend where you know, I appreciate we can (win).

“I feel free, relaxed especially the mentality was flowing my mind the way the status was flowing. And I was very convinced for what I need to be to be fast.”

Victory for Marquez was aided by Bezzecchi’s early exit. And from that point onwards it became a thrilling battle between the Spaniards.

With laps running out, Alex ate into his brother’s lead to be within striking distance at just half a second adrift.

But it was the elderly statesman who held on to pip his brother, not without his own injury woes this year, to secure a remarkable 78th victory in Moto GP.

“We are riding in the limit,” added Marquez. “And it’s true that on that sector 3, Marco was gaining three 10s every during all weekend. And he was going (pushing).

“This can happen to everybody. The most important is that now we are at equal points with Jorge.

“In Aragon already I did a step in my mentality and then what happened helps me to just concentrate and to be relaxed and I will try to do with what I have and with what I’m doing.

“That thing gives me the feeling, the feeling I believe I need to fight for the championship.”

Next up in this most intriguing of seasons is the GP of Austria at the Red Bull Ring from 18-20 September.
