Marc Marquez returns from surgery to win landmark 100th GP in Hungary

Marc Marquez completed a quite remarkable return from another injury to defy the odds and notch his 100th MotoGP victory at the Grand Prix of Hungary.

Having only returned from surgery after his huge crash at the SpanishGP, Marquez was on fire from the get-go, following up Sprint Gold at Balaton Park with a stunning win in Sunday’s feature race.

“We did an incredible job,” commented Marquez on the official Ducati website. “The secret, in my opinion, was managing the effort on Friday: this allowed me to get to Saturday, and especially today, in the best possible shape.

“Obviously, I gave it everything today and luckily the choice of the medium tyre paid off in the closing stages, otherwise it would have been a lot harder.”

Although the final margin of victory was relatively comfortable, the win wasn’t assured until Marquez came out on top of a thrilling battle with Pedro Acosta, the duo going wheel to wheel as close as to pick each other’s pockets.

But once Marquez had got the job done to the roars of the crowd, he stretched away to lead home Acosta and Francesco Bagnaia.

“Now we’ll see how things go at Brno and Assen because, once again, things went better here due to the higher number of left-handers,” added Marquez. “This win came after a challenging period of surgeries and recovery, but it was worth it.

“As always, we need to stay positive and continue along this recovery path.”

For championship leader Marco Bezzecchi, it was a miserable race as he was collected by Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin into Turn 1 in a domino effect that also sent Raul Fernandez, Fermin Aldeguer and Fabio Di Giannantonio crashing out although the latter did continue.

Victory for the brilliant Marquez means that he rivals fellow legends Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi as ton up winners.

It also means that he leapfrogs Ai Ogura to fifth in the championship standings and 24 points adrift of fourth placed Acosta.

MotoGP next heads to Brno for the Czech GP from 19-21 June.
