Marc Marquez continues title charge with victory at Aragon GP

Marc Marquez continued his quite remarkable push for another MotoGP title by holding off Pedro Acosta and Marco Bezzecchi at the Aragon GP.

It has been an amazing turnaround for the 7x world champion, Marquez suffering a huge accident at the end of 2025 that required shoulder surgery.

Another crash at Le Mans in round five of this season led to an ankle fracture leading to him missing two races.

But since then, the Spaniard has proved just why he is a legend of the sport, winning in Hungary, Czechia, Germany and now Aragon to leave him just 19 points adrift of championship leader Jorge Martin and leapfrogging third placed Bezzecchi by five points.

“Always special and with a double victory, even more so,” said Marquez. “I tell you on Thursday that my intention was to try to be close to 37 points (adrift). We achieved the 37. So very happy. It’s true that it was more difficult, always it is difficult.”

Victory for Marquez was far from straightforward after a thrilling start to the race that saw the lead protagonists dicing for position.

Having picked off Martin, his next target was Bezzecchi and he made the move stick on lap 6 to take the lead of the race as Acosta also got the jump on Bezza.

“It was more difficult because I did a big mistake on the start that I don’t remember to deactivate the rear device because on the warmup lap, we activate on the back straight and you must remember to deactivate on the start,” added Marquez.

“I didn’t remember. And then when I got from turn one that I was leading the race again, I just understand that! Okay, now it’s time to don’t (not) lose, don’t cry and just don’t lose a lot of positions and rebuild the race.”

From then on, it was very much the ‘Marc Marquez show’ as the Ducati rider dialled in stunning lap times to stretch his advantage at the front and secure an eighth Aragon GP victory at MotorLand.

It all means that with nine of the 22 rounds remaining, the fight for ultimate glory is set up for a thrilling finale.

“If we want to have a minimum chance to fight for the championship in a good circuit for us, we cannot lo points. So it’s what we did this weekend.

“It was a good circuit, we achieved the best. Even Martin struggled a bit this weekend. But I believe that Martin and Marco, they will be very fast this last part of the season.”

Next up, the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino from 11-13 September.
