Fabio Di Giannantonio wins dramatic Catalan GP from Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer

Fabio Di Giannantonio came out on top of a dramatic Catalan GP that saw thrills, spills and crashes aplenty to beat Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer to the chequered flag.

The Spanish GP weekend build-up was all about the Aprilia Racing riders who have dominated the season so far.

But Jorge Martin crashed out of contention whilst pre-race championship leader Marco Bezzecchi was never on the pace during qualifying and race day, eventually finishing down in 11th position.

In one of the most incident-packed races of the season to date, title protagonists Martin and Bezzecchi were never at the races whilst Alex Marquez suffered a nasty accident that required surgery.

“There’s not much to say about today’s race,” Acosta is quoted on motorsport.com. “The most important thing is that we know Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco are okay, as well as everyone else who crashed. Once again, we’ve had a Sunday that could have ended very badly.”

“It’s not the most pleasant feeling in the world. When something like what happened today occurs, it’s really awful that we act as if nothing happened and go out on track as normal.

“Even as MotoGP riders, who already have some experience with these things. I understand that we have to go out after a red flag, but after the second one… I don’t really agree that we should go out and race again after two red flags.

“If two nasty things have already happened in the same race, I don’t think there’s much point in going out again. I think people’s health comes before the show.”

It all means that Bezzecchi still leads the championship standings on 142 points, 15 points ahead of Martin as Di Giannantonio’s victory elevates him to third ahead of Pedro Acosta.

Next up is the Italian GP from May 29-31.
