Alex Marquez holds off Bezzecchi to go back-to-back in Jerez

Alex Marquez denied Marco Bezzecchi a sixth consecutive MotoGP victory and in doing so won a second successive Spanish GP on his home turf of Jerez.

“If there was a track where I could rediscover my feeling, it was Jerez,” commented Marquez on the official Gresini Racing website. “Magic happens here, and that’s exactly how it went.”

A highly dramatic start to the race saw 2025 winner Marc Marquez hold his pole position advantage from a fast-starting Bezzecchi.

But his lead didn’t last long, brother Alex Marquez getting past into the lead with a bold move through Turn 6. Then drama.

In an attempt to close the gap and retake the lead, Marc Marquez crashed out heavily into the gravel into Turn 11 but thankfully walked away unscathed.

It left Alex Marquez leading Bezzecchi and controlling things at the head of the field with Fabio Di Giannantonio also holding his composure to finish third.

“We did an amazing job together with the team—we worked hard, and getting two consecutive wins is absolutely incredible,” added Marquez.

“I attacked right from the start, both Marco and Marc, and then I found a strong rhythm.

“These 25 points give us a lot of confidence and at least put us back among the top 7 in the overall standings. Now we’ll try to build race by race.”

It means that Bezzecchi continues to dominate things at the head of the championship standings from Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin as Di Giannantonio jumps to third ahead of Pedro Acosta.

“I gave it my all this weekend, but unfortunately it was not enough to battle for the win,” added Bezzecchi. “During the race I managed to improve and maintain a competitive pace. In any case, I’m satisfied.

“The team did an outstanding job like always and I thank them. Now we’ll be looking ahead to the test.”

Racing resumes from May 8-10 with the Michelin Grand Prix of France at Le Mans.
