Sargeant takes championship lead after first F3 victory

Prema’s Logan Sargeant took a long overdue first victory in Formula 3 after a dominant pole to flag performance in Saturday’s feature race at Silverstone, the American holding off Jake Hughes and Liam Lawson.

Victory for the young American also means that he takes over the championship standings from Prema teammate Oscar Piastri, who started well down the grid after experiencing technical issues during qualifying before eventually finishing seventh.

“I am extremely happy,” said Sargeant afterward. “It is my first win in F3, and I am glad that it came in a Race 1. A big thank you to PREMA, they have done a fantastic job all weekend so far and now we are going to focus on tomorrow and try and make up some positions.”

Frederick Vesti made it another successful outing for the dominant Prema team by finishing fourth after a race long battle with Lawson and young Frenchman Theo Pourchaire. Bent Viscaal, Clement Novalak and Lirim Zendeli rounded off the points scoring finishers.

It means that Sargeant now leads the championship standings by just three points from Piastri but the Australian will have the advantage of starting near the front in Sunday’s reverse grid sprint race.
