Antonio Felix da Costa leads Jaguar 1-2 in dramatic Madrid ePrix

Antonio Felix da Costa won a highly tactical and entertaining Madrid ePrix, judging his Pit Boost and Attack Modes perfectly to head home Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein.

In a dramatic finish, with only one Attack Mode in operation in Madrid, it was a straight fight on energy between the top four to the flag, often side-by-side and fighting to the line.

“It is a special one for many, many reasons,” said Da Costa afterwards.

“Obviously back-to-back wins that doesn’t happen very often, a 1-2 for the team that doesn’t happen often.

“Massive congratulations to all the boys and girls in the UK providing us with these cars.

“It’s kind of a home race for me, I have a lot of friends and family here. A bit of a dream day.”

HOW THE RACE UNFOLDED

Nick Cassidy maintained his pole advantage when the lights went out, Nyck De Vries and Da Costa in close attendance with Ticktum making a great start jumping several places to fifth.

An error from De Vries under braking saw him hit the back of Wehrlein and lose his front wing, leading to a time penalty and ultimately putting him out of contention.

When racing settled into some kind of a rhythm it was Cassidy who led the fast-starting Ticktum, Wehrlein and Edoardo Mortara before the only set of six-minute Attack Modes available in Madrid.

With a mandatory ‘Pit Boost window’ stop in force, providing a 10% energy increase, the majority opted to leave it late for their Attack Modes that provide an extra 50kW of power.

And when the dust settled with a handful of laps remaining, it was the Jaguar pit crew who had judged the tactics perfectly, Da Costa heading home Evans in a dramatic finale.

For Evans, it was a bittersweet result. The New Zealander had some choice words over the radio in the race to the line as he believed he had the pace and energy to deserve the race win.

“I’m disappointed. I should have won the race, but I don’t want to take anything away from Antonio he drove a mega race, a 1-2 for the team and the team got the result they wanted.

“I was playing the long game and gained an energy advantage. They got me in the fight during the pit window especially towards the end.

“I was surprised to be in the mix but with my energy advantage… it was going to be a good finish still was but not the result I was hoping for.”

It all means that Da Costa moves up to fourth in the standings, now a point behind teammate Evans with Wehrlein leading from Mortara.

Only 19 points now separate the top four.
