In Formula One it is nothing unusual to see one team dominating for large parts, if not all season.
Most recently, McLaren exerted their dominance in 2025 whilst before that Red Bull and Mercedes enjoyed many years without any serious competition.
Going back even further was Brawn GP, Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher era and McLaren and Williams in the 80s and 90s.
So far in 2026, Mercedes again appeared to be running away with things in part due to their understanding and interpretation of the sweeping new regen Power Unit regulations.

Going into the Miami Grand Prix, Mercedes had won the opening three races and Kimi Antonelli made it four from four with another victory.

This time, however, it was far from straightforward with the Italian only just getting the better of reigning champion Lando Norris with Oscar Piastri beating the second Mercedes of George Russell to the podium.
“We leave Miami with mixed feelings,” commented Norris after the race. “As a team, we should be proud: two cars on the podium, a big points haul, and a clear step forward that put us in a genuine fight for the win.

“I felt I drove very well all weekend and extracted everything from the car. Credit to Kimi, he managed a strong race and Mercedes clearly still have an edge.
“At the same time, it hurts because a win was possible.”
For fans of the sport, this is exactly the injection the season needed and Ferrari are also not too far off the pace.
“The development battle will be crucial this season with four teams in condition to fight for Pole position and victories,” added Andrea Stella, McLaren team principal.

“Our development pathway has lots in the pipeline, with parts planned for Canada and a few more in Monaco, and Spain.
“We are in the fight, and we believe this sets the stage for a very interesting championship battle for the fans and Formula 1.”
