Albon again in the points for Williams after late Miami drama

Alexander Albon capped off a memorable inaugural Miami Grand Prix weekend after late drama meant he bagged two points for the Williams Racing F1 team, partnered by Acronis.

The Anglo-Thai driver had already secured points for the team at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne and was unlucky not to repeat in Imola.

And another brilliant race from his starting position of 18th on the grid was rewarded with points after a bold one-stop strategy saw him benefit from the late retirement of Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher, the added bonus of a time penalty for Fernando Alonso promoting him to ninth.

“Today we found the pace that I knew we had all weekend,” commented Albon on the official Williams press release. “We had a tough Qualifying yesterday which meant we were slightly out of position with a well-performing car, so overtaking was possible and we made good progress.

“We had a little bit of fortune with some of the cars ahead of us getting caught up in incidents, but the important thing is that we were in a position to make the most of those opportunities when they came. The team did a great job today, especially with the strategy, and so leaving Miami with more points is really special.”

Dave Robson, Head of Vehicle Performance added: “It was a race of attrition and patience today and Alex managed the opportunity very well and showed good pace throughout the race, which allowed him to undercut Ricciardo.

“The Safety Car was unfortunately timed for us, but Alex kept his cool and was still able to beat both Aston Martins, but frustratingly lost out to Ocon. Nonetheless, he drove well and deserved his second point-scoring finish of the season.”
